MIRROR

STUDIES

These painterly coloured drawings, with their central motif, have been a constant over the years, which Mike likens to musical scales and rhythms. They had a strange genesis, the meeting point of a mirror, dustbin and flower garden, a serendipitous start following visit to Paris, meeting Lee Krasner, (widow and seeing Monet’s remarkable water lily works in the Musee de l’Orangerie.

Much of their appeal is the meditative, mesmerising quality together with flickering surface mark making.

Alongside these woks, feeding his rich imagination are numerous allegorical black and white drawings, often small in scale, they emerge from the depths of his subconscious peopled with dream like figures and encounters which are not always benign.
